Bed Planning and Reflections
Community Bed 1
- 9 x 2 bricks
- growing space 32″ x 132″ x 8″ top depth
- Sun Level – 5
- Deep
2025 Plants:
- Peas (spring planting)
- Cabbage (spring transplant)
- Beans (summer planting)
We built a little arch trellis for the peas in the north half of the bed and planted them on the outside (2 rows). We planted 6 heads of cabbage in the middle of the entire bed. Once beans were safe to plant (summer), we planted those in the south half of the bed (2 rows).
The cabbage produced well and realized that instead of pulling up the entire plant, we could have just cut the heads and might have gotten a second harvest.
The peas grew like weeds but didn’t really follow the trellis so well. Might have needed to plant thos closer to the trellis or maybe consider a different trellis type (straight up and down).

Community Bed 2
- 9 x 2 bricks
- growing space 32″ x 132″ x 8″ top depth
- Sun Level – 5
- Deep
2025 Plants:
- Carrots (spring planting)
- Radishes (spring and fall planting)
- Beets (spring and fall planting)
- Chilis (summer transplanting)
- Zucchini (summer planting)
Got too late of a start for the fall planting so plants didn’t have long enough to harvest (other than radishes that are ready for harvest much more quickly than the carrots and beets). We did two successive plantings each season (spring and fall)
As soon as zucchini seeds were ready to plant and the peppers were ready to transplant we put those in the south half of the bed. We planted 3 zucchinis and that was probably too many. They encroached on the peppers and produced more than enough fruit for us to consume.

Community Bed 3
- 9 x 2 bricks
- growing space 32″ x 132″ x 8″ top depth
- Sun Level – 6
- Deep
2025 Plants:
Our neighbor took this bed and planted spinach seeds that did very well. Additionally they transplanted some bell pepper plants which also produced fairly well.

Community Bed 4
- 9 x 2 bricks
- growing space 32″ x 132″ x 8″ top depth
- Sun Level – 7
- Deep
2025 Plants:
- Potatoes
We used this entire bed for 8 potato plants. We purchased seed potatoes and placed them directly on the soil and then covered with 6 inches of straw. As the plants grew up out of the straw, we continued to cover with more straw. Because of the required layers of straw, we added a second level of cinderblock around the bed.

Community Bed 5
- 6 x 2 bricks
- growing space 32″ x 84″ x 8″ top depth
- Sun Level – 10
- Deep
2025 Plants:
- Spaghetti Squash (summer planting)
- Butternut Squash (summer planting)
We maybe got a late start on these, planting 3 of each in two rows along the length of the bed. The butternut squash only produced one squash but we were able to harvest about 5 spaghetti squash.

West Fence Bed 6
- 13 x 1 bricks
- growing space x 16″ x 196″ x 8″ top depth
- fit 10 tomato plants in 2024 and produced very well
- Sun Level – 7
- Moderately Deep
2025 Plants:
- Buttercrunch Lettuce (spring planting)
- Red Leaf Lettuce (spring planting)
- Tomatoes
We planted the lettuce before the tomatoes and the idea was they would provide shade for the lettuce. The lettuce produced very well but once it bolted was really bitter. We ended up having to trellis around the bed because a vole started visiting us and eating the lettuce!

North Fence Bed 7
- Sun Level – 9
- Might be Shallow
2024 Plants:
Planted 5 cucumbers, 5 snow peas, 5 green beans, 15 chili plants. Cucumbers and bean produced well. Cayenne did pretty well but few/small jalepeƱos and no fruit from habanero.
2025 Plants:
- Pickling Cucumbers (late spring planting)
We moved the trellis forward and instead of alternating plants, we just planted cucumbers. At first we transplanted some that we had started indoors but they were not surviving so we swapped with seeds and they performed very well. We had ample pickles all summer long!
