Last year we pulled out some ugly bushes and did some chili transplants here that turned out great (3 or 4 jalepeño plants). Also did a few radishes before adding any good soil and they also turned out.
2026 Plants:
- Radish (spring)
- Chilis (late spring/transplant)
Activities and Updates
February 1, 2026: Started first set of seeds indoors (lettuce, spinach, cabbage, broccoli, and hot peppers)
February 15, 2026: Started a second batch of cabbage and broccoli.
March 1, 2026: Re-seeded the lettuce and spinach because it was overwatered and invaded by fungus gnats. They appeared to be stunting or killing the small seedlings on the top shelf (lettuce, spinach); but the cabbage, broccoli and peppers on the lower shelf seemed unaffected so left those to continue growing.
Started tomatoes, sweet peppers and more hot chilis.

March 19, 2026: Having unseasonable heat, decided to go ahead and plant radishes, carrots, and beets. Planted two rows of four planned for each plant in Bed 1 (previously grew peas, beans, and cabbage)
Also checked on garlic and found it had sprouted nicely over the winter (October 2025 planting)

March 27, 2026: Transplanted 3 cabbage and 3 broccoli seedlings. Radishes have sprouted (about 1 week since planting)

April 4, 2026: Planted two more rows of radishes, carrots, and three more rows of beets. Cabbage and broccoli transplants are looking like they got disturbed and suffering. Might try just planting seeds instead and then see how the second batch of seedlings do when I transplant those in a few weeks. Making a note of this on growing broccoli so thinking I should have hardened off and also got them in the ground sooner maybe:
4-6 weeks before the last spring frost date. Once the seedlings have grown to about 2-3 inches tall and have at least two sets of true leaves, they’re ready to be transplanted outdoors.
Progress below:

Status check too on indoor seedlings:

April 7, 2026: Planted 8 potatoes! We started “chitting” them by putting them in a window sill with seed end up (as far as I could tell) but they were starting to shrivel after a day so instead just went ahead and cut them, then placed them (not cut side down) on a paper bag in a dark closet for two days before planting, cut side down and covering with 6″ or so of straw.
April 8, 2026: Went ahead an planted two rows of broccoli and cabbage seeds after the transplants looked to be toast.
April 18, 2026: A few things to update here. First, we put up fencing around one of the beds as a prototype and have enough supplies to fence in three beds for now:
Broccoli and Cabbage: Went ahead and planted the next batch of seedlings now. This was a primary reason for the fencing. Someone or something was messing with the seedlings and they are pretty much gonzo. But the direct sown seeds are sprouting too so that’s good.
April 20, 2026: Neighbors are taking two full beds (bed 3 and 5) so we built a new bed for peas! Planted the seeds and went ahead and transplanted some spinach and transplanted some of the leftover broccoli in this new bed. Fun find in the neighbor’s bed. We pulled back the burlap and found some volunteer spinach ready to harvest! That plant had bolted the year before.
Also transplanted the lettuce in the soon-to-be-tomato bed. In doing the transplant, it was clear that I had packed the seed starting soil WAY too loosely and so maybe that caused the stunting!

Tomatoes, and Peppers (Indoors): They all seem really stunted as mentioned so I potted up the tomatoes in raised bed soil and packed firmly in. Also pressed down the peppers and added some soil on top. Hopefully this gets them all going again!

May 2 – Today we built another fence to protect the lettuce from a gopher or cat that started digging holes in the bed. The peas we planted 2 weeks ago have sprouted and looking great. We’ve harvested a few radishes. Started the hardening off process for the tomato and pepper/chili plants.
Hardening Schedule (tomatoes and peppers):
| Day | Sun | Shade |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | 0 | 2 hrs |
| Day 2 | 0 | 4 hrs |
| Day 3 | 1 hr | rest of day |
| Day 4 | 2 – 3 hrs | rest of day |
| Day 5 | 4 – 5 hrs | rest of day |
| Day 6 | 6 hrs | overnight |
| Day 7 – Transplant or repeat Day 6 |

May 5 – Planted more broccoli in Bed 2 to replace the seedlings that are struggling.
May 7 – Today we planted half of bed 7 with cucumbers and half with beans (direct seeds).
